As special needs parents, we know firsthand what it’s like to struggle and at times to feel hopeless and helpless. True strength comes out of doing more and being more. Whenever I have felt that I had nothing left to give, I reflected upon the many gifts in my life and those were not fortunate enough to have the simplest things I took for granted. My gifts included: clean water, access to medical care, special needs therapy for my children, shoes for my feet, a loving husband and a bed to sleep in…the list goes on and on. Yes, I was given difficulties but I was also given many blessing in life.
At my darkest hours, counting my blessings helped me tremendously and made me fully committed to help make the world a better place in any way I could, by not only volunteering for charity organizations but by donating and financially supporting good works.
With your help, we can create a better world together. It takes a village to raise a child but it also takes a social movement to uplift, support and care for those in need.
In the last year, my husband and I have helped build special needs playgrounds, volunteered at a youth shelter, installed flooring for a free medical clinic, cooked and served meals for charity, advocated for LGBT rights, donated blood and volunteered for special needs child care for parent’s respite. This along with three special needs international adoptions from developing countries and also caring for our other children including a biological daughter with Autism, takes a great amount of commitment. And yet, no matter how much we do, there is always more charity work that needs to be done.
I’m continually humbled by others I see who do amazing things such as volunteering for a year in a hospital in India, opening LGBT support centers, humanitarian missions in developing countries and the list goes on and on. For those of you who give so generously of yourselves, I am forever grateful and humbled by your generosity and fullness of spirit. *curtsies with deep respect*
